André L. Delbecq, DBA
Ascension Health Board of Trustees

André L. Delbecq, DBA, is a member of the Ascension Health Board of Trustees. Since 1996, Dr. Delbecq has served as the J. Thomas and Kathleen L. McCarthy University Professor at Santa Clara University, Santa Clara, Calif., where he served as Dean in the Leavey School of Business from 1979-1989. Prior to 1979, he spent 12 years at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and four years at the University of Toledo.

Dr. Delbecq also is director of the Institute for the Spirituality of Organizational Leadership, created by the Leavey School of Business to explore issues of spirituality within the context of organizations. The Institute brings together scholars and business leaders to inquire about the nature of spirituality and the role it plays in organizational dynamics.

Dr. Delbecq’s educational background includes completion of a doctorate degree in 1963 and a master’s degree in business administration in 1961 from Indiana University, and a bachelor’s degree in business administration (cum laude) in 1958 from the University of Toledo.

International speaker and noted author, Dr. Delbecq's research has focused on three topics: decision-making techniques for strategic planning, board of directors and CEO behaviors required by dynamic change and the management of innovation. He is the author of the Nominal Group Technique and the Program Planning Model, both of which have been widely adopted in structuring decision-making in change efforts. Recently he has conducted research on the role of CEOs in technology firms, the business culture of Silicon Valley and medical center governance.

He is the Eighth Dean of Fellows of the Academy of Management. Dr. Delbecq is recognized nationally for executive programs delivered to high technology industries as well as health, human services and government organizations. During 1997 to 1998, the American Council of Learned Societies awarded him a Contemplative Practice Fellowship. In addition, he studied at the Graduate Theological Union at Berkeley in preparation for teaching spirituality for business leadership.

Dr. Delbecq has been a member of the Estes Park Institute faculty for medical staff and trustee education. He was named as an Honorary Fellow by the American College of Physician Executives in recognition of service in the education of physician managers, and currently serves as a faculty member for the College.
