Sponsorship and History

Ascension Health was created on November 1, 1999, from a union of the Daughters of Charity National Health System based in St. Louis, Mo., sponsored by four provinces of the Daughters of Charity, and the Sisters of St. Joseph Health System based in Ann Arbor, Mich., sponsored by the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Nazareth, Mich. (which since has joined with six other congregations to form the Congregation of St. Joseph). In December 2002, our ministry was enhanced with the addition of the hospitals and related health facilities of Carondelet Health System, also based in St. Louis, sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet.

Today, Ascension Health is sponsored by these six organizations: four provinces of the Daughters of Charity, the Congregation of St. Joseph, and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. Coming together has allowed these Sponsoring Organizations to continue their vital role in the tradition and mission of Catholic healthcare. The creation of a large system also helps ensure the vitality of Catholic hospitals as they continue to serve the needs of their local communities.

Our Sponsors Council is composed of representatives from Ascension Health's sponsoring organizations.
