Innovation Advancement

Ascension Health is leading the effort by fostering a pervasive culture of innovation and accelerating the adoption of innovative healthcare products, services, processes and technologies.

We do this by:

  • Scanning the two- to ten-year healthcare horizon to impact strategic decision-making


  • Sharing knowledge and innovations across Ascension Health to realize the benefits of systemness


  • Incubating select innovations to the next stage so that others can benefit from them more fully


  • Partnering with the best minds external to Ascension Health to accelerate and enhance the scanning, transferring and incubating

Strategic Market Intelligence and Innovation Sharing

We support the advancement of promising concepts and ideas to later stages of development by providing strategic market intelligence and enhancing the sharing of these innovations through a web-based Innovation Portal, AscensionHealthExchange.org, to transfer best practices across Ascension Health.

In particular, we have:

  • Built a Horizon Scanning capability to scan the two- to ten-year healthcare horizon for disruptive technological, economic, regulatory, workforce and consumer forces, which provides a new level of strategic vision and prospective action.


  • Created the ability to learn what works well and share it with others within our ministry, which is one of the primary values of being a large system.


  • Promoted use of AscensionHealthExchange.org to bring people across our ministry together in Communities of Practice. For example, cardiac specialists meet, interact and share information online about both clinical best practices and initiatives that have been successful and effective within their specialty.


  • Rolled out an innovation workshop, Innovation On-Location (IOL), to mine innovations at the hospital affiliates and health facilities, identify an executive-level Ministry Innovation Sharing Champion and assist the ministries in sharing their innovative processes, services and solutions with other Ascension Health hospital affiliates and health facilities that may have similar needs. IOL workshops are just one example of ways we are seeking out and sharing innovative solutions to build Healthcare That Works.
